Marion typically caters to retirees who are interested in ukulele retreats and cruises hosted by Craig and Sarah Maisel, two prominent figures in the ukulele community. During our discovery call, Marion explained that she wanted to continue planning such excursions and that she is interested in expanding into the custom trip business.
Her vision for the color palette was pink, orange, and yellow, and she used the following adjectives to describe the vibe she was aiming for:
Marion was inspired by the bright colors and loud personalities of Kate Hewko and Betsey Johnson.
Marion wanted me to include her initials, and keep it ukulele or travel themed. Since most of the trips she plans involve her clients flying from one location to another, and because she plans to expand from only ukulele retreats, I decided to include an airplane. I created two versions for her to pick from.
The first option combines her initials M and K, and an airplane as part of the K, which also contains the word "travels." The second option is solely the letter M, combined with a location icon made by the tailwind of an airplane.
I turned the sketches into digital sketches and presented both options to Marion, and she chose to proceed with option one.
Proceeding with option one, Marion wanted to move the word "travels" from inside the airplane to below the logo. I decided a sans-serif font was the best way to incorporate the airplane into the letter K, and I added a small offset path around it so it would slightly separate itself from the letter M. This makes it easier to visually differentiate between the letters when they are in color.
Speaking of color, Marion loved the bright and cheerful color palette I chose. While not as fierce as the colors commonly used by Kate Hewko and Betsey Johnson, the playful palette does bring forth some of the attributes Marion was looking for.
